No Health Without Mental Health: Denny Morrison at TEDxBloomington
Denny Morrison challenges three commonly held but irrational beliefs about behavioral health care: first, that having a mental illness or addiction is a stigma. ("To compare 'having a bad day' to major depression," he says, "is a bit like comparing a paper cut to an amputation.") Second, that the body and mind are two different things. Third, that if you have a diagnosis of mental health or addiction, it's "a living death sentence." Morrison is Chief Clinical Officer for Netsmart, the leading provider of clinical solutions for health and human services organizations nationwide. He served previously as the CEO of the Center for Behavioral Health (CBH) in Bloomington, Indiana since 1995. CBH was the first behavioral health company to ever win the JCAHO Codman Award for excellence in the use of outcomes measurement to achieve health care quality improvement; the second to win the HIMSS Nicholas E. Davies Award for Excellence in the implementation of Electronic Health Records (EHR); and is still the only organization in the world to have won both awards. In 2007, CBH was awarded the Negley Chairman's Award for Excellence in Risk Management. Morrison has worked in the behavioral health field since 1969. He holds a doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Ball State University. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

(hero/mascot/scapegoat) ~ The Internal Family Systems Center for Self-Leadership conducts training programs Basic Assumptions ~ The mind is subdivided into an indeterminate number of subpersonalities or parts. ~ Everyone has a Self which can lead the individual's internal system. ~ The non-extreme intention of each part (exile, manager and firefighter) is something positive for the individual. ~ There are no "bad" parts ~ The goal of therapy is not to eliminate parts but instead to help them find their non-extreme roles. ~ As we develop, our parts develop and form a complex system of interactions among themselves ~ When the system is reorganized, parts can change rapidly. ~ Changes in the internal system will affect changes in the external system and vice versa. Summary ~ Every person has within them a Self, exile, firefighter and manager ~ Each of these parts has a survival function ~ One goal is helping parts communicate and not overwhelm each other is essential ~ Another goal is helping the Self get back into a position in which it can listen and discern feedback from the parts to determine the best course of action

3 Instantly Calming CBT Techniques For Anxiety
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has taken a bit of a bad rap recently with meta-analytical research showing it seems to be getting increasingly less effective in the treatment of depression. And neuroscience is showing that strong emotions often precede thoughts, so changing thoughts may do little for extreme conditions like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and addictions. So in this video I seek to give you a sense of the true values and limitations of CBT, and I share 3 CBT techniques for anxiety. Cognitive and Behavioral Techniques in the Treatment of Depression
In this video from a recent Beck Institute Workshop, Dr. Aaron Beck and Dr. Judith Beck discuss ways to implement cognitive and behavioral techniques in the treatment of depression. Dr. Aaron Beck provides several examples to illustrate the efficiency of particular techniques, including behavioral activation, hypothesis testing, utilizing thought records in cognitive restructuring, and activity scheduling, in patients with depression. Both Drs. Beck note that the selection of appropriate CBT techniques depends on the case formulation and the patient's level of severity. For CBT resources, visit http://www.beckinstitute.org
